Mentoring does matter in achieving your goals

Ask anyone who is successful in their particular field and mentors will have undoubtedly played an important role in helping them achieve their goals.

Sir Richard Branson cites Sir Freddie Laker as giving invaluable advice and guidance as he set up Virgin Atlantic, while his mum has been a mentor throughout his life.

Oprah Winfrey was mentored by her 4th grade teacher Mrs Duncan, Mahatma Gandhi was a mentor to Nelson Mandela, and even Luke Skywalker was mentored by Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi.

Mentors help to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person, however true mentoring is more than just answering occasional questions or providing sporadic advice, it’s about an ongoing relationship of learning, dialogue, and challenge.

So why is a mentor so important for those looking to invest in property?

If you’re starting out in property investing, it’s certainly wise to have someone to talk to. There’s plenty of information about the industry including books, magazines and seminars, but these often lack the context you need to make the right decisions.

It’s significantly more helpful to talk with people you can respect and trust and that have been where you’re going and achieved what you aspire to, hear their thoughts and ideas, and find out exactly what they’ve done in certain circumstances, hopefully to avoid any mistakes they may have made along the way and learn what worked best for them.

This provides personalised and tailored advice and the opportunity to speak with someone reputable that has been there before.

Building wealth through property investment can be a daunting task, especially when you look at people who have been doing it for a long time and have accumulated a sizeable portfolio. But even the more experienced still need a sounding board from which to bounce ideas and work through issues.

These may include the best way to structure finances, diversifying the types of residential properties in a portfolio or scouting for new locations far from your home or where you know.

That’s why it’s important to surround yourself with like-minded people and have someone as a mentor who can guide you along your investment journey and continue to help and encourage you.

There is no use in reinventing the wheel

Successful people, regardless of their chosen field, are generally happy to share their journey, their experiences, and their 'secrets'. All you need to do is ask and then listen.

You’ll often find with a good mentor that they’ve already been down the path you’ve chosen to take, and will happily tell you what to look out for and where the road bumps might lay.

Just as with property investing for wealth creation, the advice and insightful knowledge you can gain from a mentor would have probably been passed on to them from their mentors, and so on down the line.

Don't try and go it alone and reinvent the wheel. It’s already been done, all you need to do is ask, listen to the advice and follow the well-worn path to financial freedom.

Time is money and can be better spent

Another advantage of engaging a mentor is freeing up the time you’d usually use in doing things like researching and running around looking for properties, the best finance packages, insurances and other time consuming tasks.

A mentor will be able to either give you the advice you’re looking for, or know where to go to find it quickly.

Most people just don't have the time to do this, and wouldn't your time be better spent with family or doing other things you love?
