Do you feel overwhelmed by the amount of unnecessary stuff in your life and feel like you are drowning?

Decluttering your home should be something that is done out of habit so that you don’t become too overwhelmed with your life possessions, and allow breathing space to focus on what is really important.

There is nothing more satisfying than a good purge of things you don’t need! You will find that can breathe a bit easier when you narrow down your possessions.

Clearing your home of clutter will not only create more space, but it will also clear your mind of any frustrated energy linked to the clutter, and will increase your productivity.

So… what is clutter?

Well, it is usually defined as anything that doesn’t add value to your life.

Research has found that we generally only wear 20 percent of our clothes, 80 percent of the time. This rule can generally be applied to a lot of our possessions.

You should be aiming to get rid of that 80 percent of items which you don’t use.

How to: declutter

It’s an extremely satisfying feeling being able to move around freely in a decluttered home… space is key.

Don’t bite off more than you can chew. No one has the energy to clear a whole home in the space of a single day! This will just make you frustrated and less efficient as the day progresses.

Instead, spend a few hours on a space. Start with the smaller projects, such as the linen cupboard, and you will slowly gain momentum.

Seeing through a project to completion is a great motivator. In seeing through a project you’ll feel driven to move onto the next space, and not burnt out by the process.

Remember – we aren’t all stylists! It’s great to have inspiration from magazines, but keep in mind you need to create usable spaces… especially if you have children in the mix.

You will be ultimately disappointed if perfection is your goal. Your goal should be to set up a space that works well for your needs.

Allocate a place for everything that you use. Think about investing in some storage boxes or baskets which can be placed under beds or in cupboards.

Generally speaking – when possessions have a home, clutter can be avoided!

A world of space and freshness is hiding beyond your clutter - how you get there is completely up to you, however following the above initial steps could help in kick-starting the process.
