If we were to tell you that what you wear to work has a bearing on your performance, would you put more energy into what you pull out of your wardrobe and your overall appearance?

Well...it's true! What you wear to work truly does have an impact on daily undertakings. Yes what you wear to work does make you more productive.

Although workplace practices have over time become more flexible, including dress standards, this shouldn't reflect an overall casual approach or be confused with relaxing of standards.

So how do we harness this casualisation of the workplace?

Do your homework and dress for the job you want

If you are starting a new job make sure you do your research on the company's dress code before turning up for your interview.

What you wear says a lot about you as a person, and can send out the wrong message.

Personal attire will be one of the many factors that point your interviewer in the direction of hiring you or not...because it's all about fitting into the workplace culture after all.

Don't abuse the luxury of comfort

It's true that when employees are comfortable in the work place, they're more likely to work better.

And when we wear what we like and what makes us feel confident, personal performance is inevitable.

But the freedom to select our own work wardrobe means dressing not only for ourselves, but dressing appropriately to fit the businesses image. Employees really are the face of the business.

So in saying this, set your bar high and make sure comfort doesn't outweigh professionalism.

To opt for the uniform or not

If you work for a business that gives you the option to wear a designated uniform, don't give it the flick before considering the following!

It has been found that uniforms, be it a branded t-shirt, specifically patterned clothing or a type of footwear have an effective way of transitioning people into work mode.

Uniforms can really help in differentiating work and personal time, they also mean that no thought has to be put into what you wear Monday to Friday...leaving you more time for other important things such as personal grooming.

And most importantly, a uniform gives workplaces an air of consistency and brings about a sense of tidiness.

It's important to keep in mind that what we wear, or how we wear something says a lot about who we are as individuals and as worker. So next time you're wondering what to wear to work, think a little more about how it will make you feel and how it will set the tone for your day.
